Investor Update Writer
Honest monthly and quarterly investor updates with KPIs, lowlights and specific asks
Investor Update Writer helps founders send the investor update they keep putting off: short, regular, honest and easy to skim. It is for CEOs of venture-backed or angel-backed startups who want a consistent format month after month, including the months that went badly.
How it works
Give your agent this month's numbers (a KPI CSV or pasted figures) and a few rough notes. The skill computes the changes, decides whether it is a good, mixed or hard month, and drafts the update: subject line, three-bullet TL;DR, a KPI table identical in shape to last month's, highlights, lowlights paired with causes and responses, specific asks, cash and runway. It then runs a tone pass and lists anything you should confirm before sending. It never invents numbers; gaps are marked for you.
What you get
- Templates for monthly, quarterly and hard-month updates
- A KPI tracker CSV and a standard-library Python script that calculates period-over-period changes, net new MRR, churn rates, runway and burn multiple
- Plain-English definitions of the metrics investors ask about, with the common traps
- A tone guide for writing lowlights, asks and bad news without spin
- A board deck outline for quarterly board meetings
- Two worked updates from the same fictional company: a record month and the hard month that followed
A writing aid, not financial or legal advice. For layoffs, legal issues or anything affecting investors' rights, talk to your board and counsel before the written update goes out.
Highlights
- TL;DR, KPI table, highlights, lowlights, asks, cash and runway
- Separate templates for good months, hard months and quarterly letters
- Script computes deltas, runway and burn multiple from a KPI CSV
- Plain-English metric definitions and a tone guide for bad news
- Board deck outline plus two worked updates from one fictional company
Example
Here's our KPI CSV through August. Best month ever: 11 new restaurant groups, shipped multi-location approvals. Want intros to restaurant CFOs. Write the update.
**Subject:** Fernway August 2026 update: best month yet, MRR $99.5k (+9%) **TL;DR** - MRR reached $99.5k, up 9.0% from July, with our best month of new business (11 restaurant groups). - Multi-location approvals shipped; 6 existing customers expanded within two weeks. - Ask: intros to CFOs at restaurant groups with 10-50 locations. | Metric | Aug | Jul | Change | |---|---:|---:|---:| | MRR | $99.5k | $91.3k | +$8.2k (+9.0%) | | Customers | 121 | 111 | +10 (11 new, 1 lost) | | Pipeline | $590k | $610k | -3.3% | | Net burn | $138k | $140k | -$2k | | Runway | 15.8 months (on $137k avg. burn) | 17.1 months | | ## Lowlights - **Pipeline dipped 3.3%** to $590k because we closed more than we added. Outbound restarts Sept 2; next month we'll report pipeline added, not just the balance. Before sending: confirm Brightwater agreed to be named; add the AE job link.
Rough September. Our biggest customer was acquired and cancelled, new sales halved, burn went up. I don't want to sound panicked.
**Subject:** Fernway September 2026 update: lost our largest customer, MRR down 5.6% **TL;DR** - **We lost Harbor Group, our largest customer ($7.8k MRR), after it was acquired.** With two smaller losses and slower new sales, MRR fell 5.6% to $93.9k. - Runway is 14.0 months on current burn (was 15.8). - Ask: intros to CFOs at the other groups owned by Harbor's acquirer. ## What we're doing | Action | Owner | By | |---|---|---| | Quarterly risk review of top 10 accounts | Ana | Oct 31 | | Approach the acquirer's 3 other groups | Ana | Nov 15 | | Hold hiring at 18 until net new MRR is positive two months running | Ana | Ongoing | ## What we learned Customer concentration is a risk we should have been reporting. From next month the KPI table adds "largest customer as % of MRR". Tone note: kept calm by being specific and leading with the response, not by softening the facts.
Cash $2.01M. Net burn was $138k, $140k and $152k the last three months. Net new MRR this month was $8.2k. What's our runway and burn multiple?
- Average monthly net burn (last 3 months): ($138k + $140k + $152k) / 3 = $143.3k - Runway: $2.01M / $143.3k = 14.0 months on current burn. If planned hires raise burn, runway on the plan will be shorter; say which one you report. - Burn multiple (this month): net burn / net new ARR = $152k / ($8.2k x 12) = $152k / $98.4k = 1.54. Lower is better; compare the trend over a quarter rather than one month. For the update: "Runway 14.0 months on $143k average monthly net burn."
